Dr Schweitzer’s great observation.

World-renowned Doctor and Nobel Prize winner Dr. Albert Schweitzer (1875-1965) once famously said:-

“Patients carry their doctor inside. They come to us (physicians) not knowing that truth. We are at our best when we give the physician who resides within each patient a chance to go to work.”*

Dr. Schweitzer’s emphasis on the inner physician within each patient encourages a holistic approach to healthcare and recognises the patient’s role in their healing process. This quote highlights his humanitarian and philosophical approach to medicine and the doctor-patient relationship.

As the healing centres of the body all reside in the subconscious mind, then it seems natural to become aware of this ‘inner physician’, as Dr Schweitzer has it, and develop its innate capabilities, which are very strong in childhood and teens but then seem to wane in later years, letting all manner of severe illness and disease invade and affect us adversely; keeping the inner (subconscious) mind healthy and strong is critical to our health and wellbeing, especially as we age; as studies on dementia are showing; there are many ways of doing this, with keeping cortisol (the “stress hormone”) controlled being a major one of them.

One of the key aims of our Qigong and Guided Visualisation classes is to encourage that powerful inner physician/healing ability to work better for us, more like it did when we were children, when the subconscious mind was fully in control of us as the conscious (pre-frontal cortex) mind was still developing (current research shows that this is not fully formed until 25 – 27 years of age). This is done primarily through the techniques and suggestions both in the qigong part and more directly through the guided visualisation, and while this is not targeted to any specific ailment, it is a holistic method to engage and develop our inner ability for maintaining better health – for as we know, the body is always trying to set things right, and has an incredible wealth of internal biochemicals and functions at its disposal to make this happen, this simply promotes and encourages that wonderful process.
